Mayekawa, a leading Japanese manufacturer of natural refrigerant refrigeration equipment, exhibited the new fourth-generation model of its NewTon ammonia (R717)/CO2 (R744) industrial refrigeration unit at FOOMA JAPAN 2022, the International Food Industry Exhibition, held in Tokyo from June 7 to 10.

Mayekawa markets four new NewTon models: R-6000, R-3000, F-600 and F-300.

The new NewTon models feature several improvements over previous models:

  • 5% higher freezing capacity
  •  3dB quieter
  • 12% smaller
  • 9.5% less ammonia charge (19kg [42lbs] rather than 21kg [46lbs])

According to Mayekawa, 2,700 units of the NewTon series were sold between 2008 and 2021.

“We hope to sell 3,000 units of the NewTon by 2023,” said Norihito Fujigaki, Mayekawa’s Food Market Division Manager.

The new NewTon is a recipient of the Sustainable Open Innovation Initiative[JH1]  award, which supports the introduction of advanced energy-saving equipment in Japan.

Tokyo-based Nissui Logistics Corporation was the first company to test the NewTon system in Japan in 2008. It installed another unit in 2020.

The NewTon is not currently being used for air-conditioning applications. However, Fujigaki said that the Mayekawa’s Smart Chiller, which uses ammonia brine, may be used for air-conditioning applications in the future.

Mayekawa also exhibited its COPEL CO2 condensing unit at FOOMA Japan 2022.

“We hope to sell 3,000 units of the NewTon by 2023.”
