British gas-detection equipment specialist International Gas Detectors (IGD) has joined the world’s leading ammonia (R717) HVAC&R stakeholders as a silver partner of the Ammonia21.com marketplace, operated by ATMOsphere.

IGD’s range of ammonia detection products – such as portable monitors and fixed sensors – are designed to protect people and plants against gas hazards in several applications, including industrial refrigeration.

According to the manufacturer, ammonia is becoming increasing popular as a replacement for synthetic refrigerants as they are phased out. In addition to being cost effective and efficient, R717 is also safe for the environment, it said.

Accurate and fast detection

“It is important for many industries to have accurate and fast detection of ammonia to avoid the gas reaching dangerous toxic levels,” explained IGD on its website. “Reliable gas detectors are essential to safeguard against leaks and ensure the safety of personnel.”

Industrial refrigeration operators faces additional challenges when it comes to gas detection at low temperatures, the company added.

“Detecting ammonia at low temperatures presents some unique challenges,” it said. “Many electrochemical sensors are only rated to -20°C [-4°F], and optical sensors suffer at these temperatures too, due to icing and condensation issues. At IGD, we came up with our solution to the problem of measuring ammonia at low temperatures, enabling accurate operation down to -40°C [-40°F].”

IGD

With over 100 years’ experience in manufacturing gas detection equipment, IGD offers its customers a “true turn-key” service, from consultation and design through to installation, it said. It offers a complete range of gas detection products for zoned hazardous area applications (ATEX) and non-zoned safe areas.

In addition to ammonia gas detectors, IGD also manufactures sensors for CO2 (R744), hydrocarbons and a range of other gases. It is also a silver partner on R744.com, another marketplace operated by ATMOsphere.
