Benjamin Zühlsdorf, consultant at the Danish Technological Institute, has won first prize in eurammon’s Natural Refrigeration Award 2020 competition for his thesis: “High-performance heat pump systems – Enhancing performance and range of heat pump systems for industry and district heating.”
His PhD project was carried out at the Danish Technological University and looked at how the efficiency of heat pumps can be increased by choosing the right working fluids, including a look at R744 and R718 technologies for supplying process heat at temperatures above 150°C (302°F).
The award is handed out to the three best scientific theses in the field of refrigeration, air conditioning or heat pump applications with natural refrigerants.
Maaike Leichsenring from Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands placed second for her thesis: “Flow visualization of downward condensing ammonia in a gasketed plate heat exchanger.” Fabio Giunta from the Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden won third prize for his “Techno-economic assessment of CO2 refrigeration systems with geothermal integration, a field measurements and modelling analysis” project.
The three winners will each present a summary of their theses at an online ceremony on October 9, from 8.30 am to 10.30 am CEST. You can sign up to participate in the ceremony here.
“We are proud to award the three winners with a prize money of €5,000 (US$5,890.00) [each],” said Monika Witt, eurammon vice chair, “and to give them the opportunity to present their theses to an international expert audience.”
eurammon is a European association of companies, institutions, and individuals dedicated to promoting natural refrigerants research, and to actively advance the development of innovative, environmentally friendly and energy-efficient heating and cooling systems.
In 2020, eurammon is handing out the Natural Refrigeration Award for the eighth time. This happens in collaboration with the International Academy of Refrigeration, the Representative office in Kazakhstan, and the trade journal cci Dialog GmbH.
All graduates and young scientists from universities, polytechnics, colleges, and similar institutions can participate. They must submit a scientific paper that has been accredited as a doctoral, master’s or bachelor’s thesis, or final paper for a similar degree.
