Ammonia warehouse in Colombia’s Santa Marta port exemplifies sustainable refrigeration

Santa Marta port has acquired a 10,000m2 warehouse facility equipped with a cutting edge ammonia system to store frozen products that will be distributed in Colombia and beyond. With this system, the port aims to become a benchmark in the country when it comes to efficient, sustainable refrigeration technology.

The Santa Marta port, located in Santa Marta, Colombia, is one of the main ports in the Colombian Caribbean, representing an important entrance/exist access for local and international products. The port is operates 24/7, 365 days a year and provides warehouse and logistics services.

On 27 January 2015, the port announced the acquisition, by public tender, of a new warehouse and distribution centre that is equipped with a state of the art ammonia refrigeration system. The facility, which is currently located at the Corpus Christi port (Texas, U.S.), will be transported to and commissioned in Santa Marta in the coming months.

Colombia’s largest ammonia cold store facility

With this acquisition, Santa Marta will be the first port in Colombia to have this kind of infrastructure, which will be the biggest and first ammonia-based cold store facility in the country.

Main features of the facility include:

  • 10,000 m2 size
  • Refrigeration area and cooling tunnels at -37°C
  • Store capacity of 8,615 pallets
  • 19 docks with hermetic seal
  • Temperature range from -33°C to +10°C
  • Control system technology
  • Eight exchangeable modules to cooler/freezer
  • Automatic systems register to control temperature, providing constant supervision of the products in stock, ensuring product quality

In addition, the future facility will have several docks for loading and unloading merchandise. It will be equipped with electric forklifts and other innovations in machinery automation such as packing and distribution, which will allow for significant time and cost reductions within the logistic process.
