Industrial ammonia refrigeration projects supported by MOE Japan

Four industrial ammonia refrigeration projects were introduced in a recent publication of the Japanese Government. Highly efficient systems help reduce the energy consumption at a beer factory by more than 1.1 GWh.

The Ministry of the Environment of Japan (MOEJ) recently published a pamphlet introducing 9 exemplary projects using natural refrigerant technologies in different applications in Japan. The MOEJ has been providing financial assistance to projects introducing energy-efficient freezing/refrigeration equipment that uses natural refrigerants. The scheme applies for reducing direct and indirect CO2 emissions when renewing the existing facility or building a new facility.

Ammonia based brine cooling system at a beer factory

Energy consumption reduction of 1,150 MWh annually was achieved by an ammonia system at the Asahi Beer Ibaraki factory. Two NH3-based cooling units were installed in a cascade system to cool the heated brine.¬ The system operation efficiency has been enhanced by flexible use of these two units – when the temperature of the brine is not high, only one ammonia cooling unit is in operation.

Latest cooling system for logistics centre

A freezing system based on NH3/CO2 is used at the 18,118 m2 logistics centre of Japanese Consumer’s Cooperative Union (CO-OP) located in Onomichi, Hiroshima prefecture. The ammonia and CO2 cooling system delivering cooling at -25°C and +5°C contributes to annual energy savings of 374,024 kWh.

The NH3/CO2 system is used also in Hokuho Logistics Centre in Osaka operated by Yohorei. The logistics centre requires for its operation a capacity of 27,000 cooling tons. The renewal of the cooling system led to an energy consumption reduction of 570,000 kWh/year.

R744/ammonia in food processing factory

A freezing system that uses NH3 as a primary refrigerant and CO2 as a secondary refrigerant was selected to freeze cooked food in the construction of a food processing factory. The factory operated by AQLI Foods is located in Yubari, Hokkaido prefecture. The freezing system with a capacity of 230 kW was manufactured by Toyo Engineering Works, the installation costs were 189.3 million JPY (1.76 million EUR). The installed system reduces energy consumption by 246 MWh annually and contributes to total electricity consumption of 540 MWh per year.

Subsidiary rules

The listed projects received support from the MOEJ subsidy program between fiscal years 2008 and 2012 with the following rules:
  • Eligible applicants for subsidy: Private companies
  • Projects eligible for subsidy: Projects to introduce energy efficient freezing and/or refrigeration equipment that uses natural refrigerants
  • Subsidization ratio: A maximum of 1/3 of the cost incurred for the introduction of the eligible equipment that is incremental to the cost of the comparable HFC-based equipment, including the installation cost
