New ammonia compressor range by GEA Refrigeration Technologies

GEA RT will be present at the upcoming event Chillventa 2012 to be held in Nuremberg, in October. Taking the opportunity of this market leading trade fair, the German supplier will unveil its new Grasso MS compressor range for air conditioning and refrigeration applications, industrial chillers and heat pumps to a public of experts. Read on as well about recent applications of GEA Goedhart evaporators in UK.

This new, high efficient, ammonia chiller screw compressor range by GEA is medium sized and offers better speed control abilities. Used in compact GEA Grasso BluAstrum chillers systems, the new compressor is supposed to achieve better European Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio possible (ESEER, Eurovent Institute, Europe).

Medium-sized GEA Grasso compressors

The new MS type compressor is medium sized: An internal continuous Vi control system allows adapting its internal volume conditions to external plant pressure conditions ensuring great energy efficiency under various operational states.

Moreover, the cooling output of the compressor can be regulated via the motor speed, since the MS compressor is driven by a variable-speed motor and a frequency converter allowing speed control.

A recent paper by Dmytro Zaytsev presented at the last Gustav Lorentzen conference has already mentioned that a newly developed single Vi-slide system with variable speed drive using a new ammonia chiller compressor developed by GEA Refrigeration Technologies, has the best coefficient of performance (COP) in part load compared to other system like single slide capacity control, parallel slide or tandem slide control.

GEA Refrigeration technologies will showcase the new Grasso MS at Chillventa 2012. You can visit their company booth, from 9 to 11 October 2012, in Hall 4, Stand 4-316 and a Press Breakfast will be held on Wednesday, October 10, 2012, at 9:00 a.m.

Recent GEA Goedhart ammonia project in UK

Four giant stainless steel evaporators from GEA Goedhart have been installed in VIA’s cold store in Scunthorpe in the North of England. The manufacturer has provided tailor-made and ready built units adapted to the industrial scale and capacity of the project:
  • The facility can accommodate 14,000 pallets of frozen produce at -25°C.
  • The new stainless steel plant was coming in replacement of six original units with copper evaporators which had suffered from corrosion and had to fit into existing mountings and pipe work.
  • Each new unit had to provide 188kW of cooling, with a combined capacity of 752kW as in the original system.

The 4 units, each six-and-a-half metres long and over two metres high, have been manufactured and shipped directly from Holland.

Specifications of the system installed in UK

The specifications of the system recently installed in UK are:
  • Refrigeration plant based on a secondary system using ammonia as the primary refrigerant
  • Hycool 50 coolant in the secondary circuit
  • Large plate heat exchanger connecting the two circuits
  • All ammonia pipe work kept out of the storage and working area
  • Floor-mounted evaporators connected to vertical ducts supplying cold air at high level across the frozen food storage area.
